Dick Schofield is a highly respected figure in professional baseball, known for his longevity, defensive excellence, and deep-rooted family legacy in the game. Over 14 seasons in Major League Baseball (1983–1996), he established himself as a dependable shortstop after being drafted third overall by the California Angels. Renowned for his consistency, versatility, and baseball IQ, Schofield contributed both in the field and at the plate across more than 4,000 career at-bats.
During his career, he played for the California Angels, New York Mets, Toronto Blue Jays, and Los Angeles Dodgers. A defining moment came in 1993 when he helped the Blue Jays capture a World Series title, adding championship experience to his impressive résumé. Baseball runs deep in the Schofield family, spanning four generations of professional players—an extraordinary testament to his lifelong connection to the sport.
After retiring, Schofield continued to impact the game through coaching and player development. He spent years working in minor league systems, focusing on infield fundamentals such as footwork, positioning, and situational awareness. Known as a “player’s coach,” he is respected for his clear communication, patience, and ability to connect with athletes.
Today, Schofield brings his experience and passion to his role as an instructor at Volusia Sports Center. His presence gives athletes a rare opportunity to learn directly from a Major League veteran and World Series champion. Volusia Sports Center is proud to have him on board as he continues to mentor, develop, and inspire the next generation of players.
